History
At Blaydon West Primary School, we place a great emphasis on the importance of History in our curriculum. History inspires children to be have a deeper curiosity about how society has changed over a course of time and develop critical thinking.
- Lessons are progressive and build on depth of knowledge and key concepts.
- Teachers plan lessons using Keystage History, our bespoke skills progression document and knowledge organisers.
- Skills are modelled and taught clearly and effectively.
- History lessons are taught discretely with cross-curricular links, where appropriate.
- Teachers follow the interests of the children to ensure learning is engaging, board and balanced.
- Children have the opportunity to use a variety of sources as evidence, including artefacts.
- Displays are used around school and in classrooms to showcase the progression of knowledge and skills.
- Children work with historical experts and professionals on educational visits.
In our Early Years Foundation Stage:
- Children talk about past and present event in their own lives and the lives of others around them.
In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children study the National Curriculum for History and we aim to:
- Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of local, British, and world history.
- Introduce children to wider historical concepts such as: continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference, and significance.
- Encourage children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop perspective and judgement.
