At Blaydon West Primary School, we place a great emphasis on the importance of learning an additional language. Learning to speak in French enables children to develop an understanding and respect for other cultures whilst learning to speak a new language.

All classes have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned lessons.

  • Teachers plan lessons using Language Angels planning and resources, our skills progression document and recovery documentation.
  • Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their foreign language lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Skills are modelled and taught clearly and effectively.
  • Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes
  • Displays are used around school and in classrooms to showcase the progression of knowledge and skills.
  • An after school French club is held for one half term each year.

In Key Stage 2, children study the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages and we aim to:

  • Engage, motivate and inspire all children to learn an additional language.
  • Give pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences.
  • Enable pupils to share their ideas and thoughts in another language.
  • Allow children to understand and respond to French, both in writing and spoken language and become life-long language learners.
