Reading and Phonics

To teach reading, we use a range of schemes including Pelican, Ginn, Oxford Reading Tree and Story World.

Children bring home a ‘home reading book’ every day, which is changed on a regular basis depending on the length of the book. Parents/carers are encouraged to comment on how well their child has read, any tricky words encountered and so on in the yellow reading record book. This is a vital communication tool between home and school and your support with your child’s reading is crucial to their development.

Infant classes enjoy regular ‘story time’, while Junior classes enjoy the opportunity to engage with longer texts through their literacy units.

To teach phonics, we use a combination of the Letters and Sounds programme and the Jolly Phonics scheme.
